Before you start
Please read through the entire pattern before you begin. Unless otherwise stated, work in continuous spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
The head and body are crocheted in one piece. Arms, legs, ears, muzzle and tail are worked separately and sewn on later.

Begin stuffing the head firmly.

Cut the yarn, weave through front loops, pull tight and fasten off securely.
Step 2: Arms (×2)
Use grey-brown yarn.
1 rd – 7 sc in a magic ring
2 rd – 7 inc (14)

6 – 9 rd – 7 sc → change to natural yarn
10 – 13 rd – 7 sc
Flatten the top and close by crocheting 3 sc through both layers.
Leave a long tail and sew the arms to the sides of the body (between rounds 19 and 20).
Step 3: Tail
Use grey-brown yarn.
1 rd – 5 sc in a magic ring
2 rd – 5 sc
3 rd – 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc (7)
4 rd – 7 sc
5 rd – 2 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 1 sc (9)
6 rd – 9 sc

Flatten the tail and close by crocheting 6 sc through both layers.
Leave a long tail and sew the tail to the back of the body (between rounds 4 and 5).
Step 4: Feet (×2)
Use grey-brown yarn.
1 rd – 8 sc in a magic ring
2 rd – 8 inc (16)
3 rd – 16 sc
4 rd – 4 sc, 4 dec, 4 sc (12)
5 rd – 12 sc
6 rd – 6 dec (6)
Finish with 1 sl st, leave a long tail.
Lightly stuff the feet and sew them to the front of the body so the otter can sit upright.
Step 5: Frilled collar
Use natural yarn, work in rows.
Chain 25, start in 2nd ch from hook:
Row 1 – (3 sc, inc) × 6, chain 5 to turn (30)
Row 2 – skip 1 st, (1 sc, ch 4, skip 1 st) × 14, 1 sc
You’ll have 15 loops.
Leave a long tail, place the collar loosely around the neck and sew it in place with a light ruffle effect.
Step 6: Muzzle
Use natural yarn.
Chain 8, start in 2nd ch from hook:
Round 1 – 6 sc, ° 3 sc °, continue on the other side: 5 sc, inc (16)
Round 2 – inc, 5 sc, 3 inc, 5 sc, 2 inc (22)
Rounds 3–4 – 22 sc
End with 1 sl st, leave a long tail.
Sew the muzzle to the front of the head (covering rounds 25–28) and stuff lightly."
Step 7: Nose bridge
Use grey-brown yarn, work in rows.
Chain 8, start in 2nd ch from hook: inc, 5 sc, inc (9)
Row 2 – inc, 7 sc, inc (11)
Rows 3–4 – 11 sc
Leave a long tail.
Step 8: Nose & Eyes
Use black yarn.
Crochet along the base chain of the nose bridge:
Make 1 ch (= 1 sc), 2 sc, 1 dc, 3 sc.
Leave a long tail.
Position the bridge on top of the muzzle (nose pointing forward) and sew in place with grey-brown yarn.
Attach the black nose, then embroider a thin vertical line (philtrum) from the nose towards the eyes.
Embroider the eyes on rounds 30 and 31 with about 9 stitches between them.
Step 9 – Ears (×2)
Use grey-brown yarn.
7 hdc in a magic ring, leave a long tail.
Sew the ears to the sides of the head (covering rounds 37 to 40).
Step 10 – Cheeks (×2)
Use pink yarn.
6 sc in a magic ring, close with 1 sl st in first st.
Leave a long tail and sew the cheeks next to the muzzle, slightly under the eyes.
