Crochet a Koala
Koala
Crochet a sweet amigurumi koala with this step-by-step pattern. Koalas are marsupials and are loved for their round ears, large nose and cuddly look. The name “koala” roughly means “does not drink”, as koalas get much of their fluid from eucalyptus leaves.
Whether you make it as a thoughtful DIY gift, a decoration or a small crochet project for in between, this koala is a lovely animal amigurumi pattern for anyone who enjoys crocheting cute characters.

- Prym Natural crochet hook, 2.5 mm

Technical notes
Read the crochet pattern all the way through before you begin. This makes it easier to understand the individual steps and prepare all materials.
Unless stated otherwise, crochet in continuous spiral rounds. Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker so you can keep track easily.
The head and body are crocheted in one piece. Arms, legs, ears, muzzle and tail are made separately and sewn to the head and body as described in the pattern.

Step 1: Crochet the body and head
Crochet with the yarn in Nebel.
1st rnd: Work 6 sc into a yarn ring.
2nd rnd: Work 6 inc. (12)
3rd rnd: (1 sc, inc) rep 6 times. (18)
4th rnd: (2 sc, inc) rep 6 times. (24)
5th rnd: (3 sc, inc) rep 6 times. (30)
6th rnd: 30 sc.
7th rnd: (4 sc, inc) rep 6 times. (36)
8th–11th rnds (4 rounds): 36 sc.
12th rnd: (4 sc, dec) rep 6 times. (30)
13th and 14th rnds: 30 sc.

Firmly stuff the body with toy stuffing.
In the 23rd rnd, make sure to crochet into the slip stitches of the previous round.

Now start stuffing the head. Continue stuffing firmly up to the last round.

Cut the yarn and pull it completely through the last st. Thread the yarn onto a needle and weave it through the front loops of the last round. Pull the circle closed to close the head, then weave in the end.
Step 2: Crochet the arms (2x)
Crochet with the yarn in Nebel.
1st rnd: Work 7 sc into a yarn ring.
2nd rnd: Work 7 inc. (14)
3rd and 4th rnds: 14 sc.
5th rnd: Work 7 dec. (7)
6th–13th rnds (8 rounds): 7 sc.
Press the top of the arm flat. To close it, crochet 3 sc through both sides at the same time.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it completely through the last st. Sew the arms to the sides of the body between rnd 19 and rnd 20.
Step 3: Crochet the nose
Crochet with the yarn in Black.
Chain 4. Start in the 2nd ch from the hook and crochet as follows:
1st rnd: 2 sc, °6 sc°, 2 sc. (10)
2nd rnd: inc, 2 sc, °3 sc°, 2 sc, °3 sc°, 3 sc. (15)
3rd rnd: 15 sc.
Work 1 sl st into the next st. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it completely through the last st.
Sew the nose to the head. The more pointed side faces upwards. The nose covers rnd 29 to rnd 34. Lightly stuff the nose while sewing it on. Leave a long yarn tail so you can embroider the eyes afterwards.
Tip: Pin the nose to the head before sewing it in place.
Step 4: Crochet the muzzle
Crochet with the yarn in Natur.
1st rnd: Work 6 sc into a yarn ring.
2nd rnd: Work 6 inc. (12)
3rd rnd: 12 sc.
Work 1 sl st into the next-but-one st. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it completely through the last st.
Press one side of the semicircle in so that a “triangle” is formed. Sew the muzzle to the head with the straight side directly below the nose.
Step 5: Embroider the eyes
Work with the yarn in Black.
Embroider the eyes so that they cover rnd 29 and rnd 30 of the head. Place them to the right and left of the nose, each about 2 sts away.
Tip: Mark the eye positions with pins before embroidering.
Step 6: Crochet the feet and legs (2x)
Crochet with the yarn in Nebel.
1st rnd: Work 8 sc into a yarn ring.
2nd rnd: Work 8 inc. (16)
3rd and 4th rnds: 16 sc.
5th rnd: Work 8 dec. (8)
6th–10th rnds: 8 sc.
Press the top of the leg flat. To close it, crochet 4 sc through both sides at the same time.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it completely through the last st. Sew the legs to the lower sides of the body between rnd 5 and rnd 6.
Step 7: Crochet the inner ears (2x)
Crochet with the yarn in Natur.
The inner ears are crocheted in rows. Each row ends with a t-ch.
1st row: Work 3 sc into a yarn ring.
2nd row: Work 3 inc. (6)
3rd row: (1 sc, inc) rep 3 times. (9)
4th row: (2 sc, inc) rep 3 times. (12)
5th row: (3 sc, inc) rep 3 times. (15)
6th row: (4 sc, inc) rep 3 times. (18)
Now continue crocheting along the straight edge of the semicircle: 6 sc, 1 sc into the yarn ring, 6 sc.
Work 1 sl st into the first st of row 6.
Cut the yarn, pull it completely through the last st and weave in the end.
Step 8: Crochet the outer ears (2x)
Crochet with the yarn in Nebel.
Crochet in rows. Work the outer ears in the same way as the inner ears, but do not cut the yarn after the final sl st.
Place one inner ear on top of one outer ear. Now crochet through both ears at the same time to join the two pieces.
Crochet once around the ear as follows: 18 sc along the semicircle, 13 sc along the straight side, 1 sc into the sl st. (32)
Work 1 sl st into the first st of the round. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it completely through the last st.
Fold in one corner of each ear and sew the ears to the sides of the head. They cover rnd 29 to rnd 40.
Step 9: Crochet the cheeks (2x)
Crochet with the yarn in Rose Gold.
Work 6 sc into a yarn ring.
Work 1 sl st into the first st to close the round.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it completely through the last st.
Sew the cheeks to the head on the right and left at mouth height, slightly diagonally below the eyes.
