Knit a Hooded Scarf

Knit a Hooded Scarf

This hooded scarf is the perfect winter accessory: warm, modern and surprisingly easy to make. Worked in full brioche stitch, the fabric becomes wonderfully soft and voluminous. Ideal for anyone looking to knit a hooded scarf, create a practical winter gift, or explore a beginner-friendly brioche project. The hood is constructed from four simple pieces that are sewn together before attaching the long scarf.

Materials

Introduction

The hood is knitted in four separate pieces using full brioche stitch.

Gauge: 10 × 10 cm = 13 sts × 17 rows

1. Side Pieces (2× approx. 20 × 20 cm)

  • Cast on 26 sts.
  • Work 68 rows in full brioche.
  • Bind off elastically on the final row.

2. Middle Piece (approx. 15 × 40 cm)

  • Cast on 20 sts.
  • Work 132 rows.
  • Bind off elastically.

3. Scarf (approx. 100 × 12 cm)

Increase section

  • Cast on 6 sts.
  • Every 16th row: work 2 increases into the first brioche stitch (1 stitch becomes 3).
  • The middle of these 3 sts is always worked normally (knit) in the next row.
  • Increase until there are 16 sts total (5 increase rows).

Straight section

  • Work 187 rows without increases.

Decrease section

  • Row 188: slip the first brioche stitch, k2tog the next 2 sts, pass slipped stitch over.
  • Continue working two decreases every 16th row until only 6 sts remain.
  • Bind off elastically on the next 16th-row cycle.

4. Finishing

  • Fold the middle piece around two adjoining edges of a side piece (right angle) and sew in place.
  • Repeat on the other side with the second side piece.
  • Attach the scarf to the bottom edge of the hood.
  • Fold the scarf upward while wearing to shape the hood comfortably.
