Crochet a Mask Monster
Mask Monster
With this amigurumi crochet pattern, you can make a playful Mask Monster that clips easily to a bag, backpack or key ring. The body is worked in continuous spiral rounds. Eyes, teeth, the carabiner loop and the side bumps are sewn on afterwards.
The pattern includes two colour examples: a colourful Mask Monster and a grey version. The colour references are intended as a guide only; you can, of course, choose any colours you like.
Materials required
For the colourful monster, you will need 1 ball of Lana Grossa Cotone in each of the following colours:
04 – wine red
23 – pistachio
11 – blue
33 – light blue
38 – golden yellow
22 – white
For the grey monster, you will need 1 ball of Lana Grossa Cotone in each of the following colours:
19 – dark grey
27 – light grey
22 – white
21 – black
38 – golden yellow

Crochet technique notes
- The Mask Monster and all accompanying elements are crocheted in continuous spiral rounds using the amigurumi technique.
- The loop for the carabiner is worked in rows. The turning chain at the end of a row does not count as a stitch.
- The body is crocheted in one piece. The eyes, teeth, carabiner loop and side bumps are then sewn to the body as described.
- The black elements on the eye patches are Prym trouser buttons from the 15 mm and 17 mm combination pack. In this example, the 15 mm buttons are used for the colourful monster and the 17 mm buttons for the grey Mask Monster.
- The pattern lists the colours for both examples. The colour for the colourful version is given first. The colour after the slash refers to the grey Mask Monster. You can choose your own colours; the shades listed here are examples only.

Step 1: Crochet the body of the Mask Monster
With wine red / light grey, chain 31. Starting in the second chain from the hook, continue as follows:
Rnd 1: 29 sc, °3 sc° in the last chain. Turn the work by 90° and continue along the other side of the foundation chain: 29 sc, °3 sc° in the last chain. (64 sts)
From now on, work in rounds.
Rnd 2–24 (23 rounds): 64 sc. (64 sts)
Step 2: Crochet the mouth opening
Rnd 25: 8 sc, ch 26, skip 26 stitches of the previous round. Starting in the next stitch of the previous round, crochet 30 sc to the end of round 25. (64 sts)
Tip: Make sure the chain does not twist.
Step 3: Finish crocheting the body
Rnd 26–39 (14 rounds): 64 sc.
Then crochet 10 more sc until you reach the edge of the folded body. The exact number of stitches may vary slightly. The important thing is to crochet up to the edge. Finish the round with 1 sl st.
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approx. 40 cm.
Step 4: Sew the open side together
Fold the body and sew the opposite stitches together. Weave in the yarn tail on the inside of the body and trim any remaining ends.
Step 5: Crochet two eyes
Use white yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a MR. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 6 inc. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: (inc, 1 sc) rep 6 times. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: (inc, 2 sc) rep 6 times. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: (inc, 3 sc) rep 6 times. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: 30 sc, 1 sl st. (30 sts)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approx. 20 cm.
Crochet 2 eyes in total in this way.
Step 6: Sew on the eyes
Position the white eye patches above the open mouth and secure them with pins. Sew the eyes to the front of the body along the edges.
Then place the trouser buttons on the eye patches. The colourful monster uses 15 mm buttons; the grey monster uses 17 mm buttons. Sew the buttons onto the eye patches so that the eyes look slightly cross-eyed.
Step 7: Crochet two teeth
Use white yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a MR. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 6 inc. (12 sts) Rnd 3–5 (3 rounds): 12 sc. (12 sts)
Flatten the tooth and crochet the opposite stitches together with 6 sc.
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approx. 20 cm.
Crochet 2 teeth in total in this way.
Pin the teeth to the left and right outer edges of the mouth opening. Then sew them to the edge of the mouth opening.
Step 8: Crochet eight large bumps
Use yarn in pistachio and golden yellow / dark grey and black-white.
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a MR. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 6 inc. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: (inc, 1 sc) rep 6 times. (18 sts)
Rnd 4–13 (10 rounds): 18 sc. (18 sts)
Flatten the element and crochet the opposite stitches together with 9 sc.
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approx. 20 cm.
Crochet 4 large bumps in each colour. For the colourful example, this means 4 in pistachio and 4 in golden yellow. For the grey example, it means 4 in dark grey and 4 in black-white. You will need 8 large bumps in total.
Work the black-and-white version in the following colour sequence:
Rnd 1–3: black
Rnd 4–5: white
Rnd 6–7: black
Rnd 8–9: white
Rnd 10–11: black
Rnd 12–13: white
Step 9: Crochet eight small bumps
Use yarn in blue and light blue / light grey and golden yellow.
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a MR. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: 6 inc. (12 sts)
Rnd 3–9 (7 rounds): 12 sc. (12 sts)
Flatten the element and crochet the opposite stitches together with 6 sc.
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approx. 20 cm.
Crochet 4 small bumps in each colour. For the colourful version, this means 4 in blue and 4 in light blue. For the grey example, it means 4 in light grey and 4 in golden yellow. You will need 8 small bumps in total.
Step 10: Attach the bumps to the body
Position the 8 large and 8 small bumps along the edges of the body as you like. Try different colour sequences and decide whether you want to alternate small and large bumps.
The slightly smaller section after the mouth opening on the body (rnds 26–39) sits at the bottom and forms the “chin”.
Pin the bumps in place one by one. Then sew them all around the body with the yarn needle. Leave a little space at one upper corner for the carabiner loop.
Step 11: Crochet the loop for the carabiner
With wine red / light grey, chain 13. Starting in the second chain from the hook, continue as follows:
Row 1: 12 sc, t-ch. (12 sts)
Row 2: 12 sc. (12 sts)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of approx. 20 cm.
Step 12: Finishing
Weave in all yarn ends inside the Mask Monster.
