Tailor's chalk or marking pen?

Here we explain the differences between the two ways of marking fabric.

Whether you want to learn to sew as a beginner or you are looking for the right marking pen for fabric as an advanced sewer. Our overview gives you a chance to get to know the different pens better.

The Aqua Trick Marker

Washable marker pen

Our aqua trick markers are an alternative to tailor's chalk. They can be easily washed out with water and, unlike the simple trick marker, they do not disappear by themselves, but have to be erased with water.

We offer the aqua trick marker with a white lead, which makes it the ideal marker for dark fabrics. We also offer it with a turquoise lead, which is ideal for light fabrics. For all those who want to have a water pen on the sewing table for erasing, the marking pen is also available as a set.

Nice to know: the water pen is also ideal for removing small stains 😉.

Application: light and dark fabrics

Thickness: fine and normal

Colors: white & turquoise

Note: washable

Important tip before you start marking:

If possible, wash the fabric before processing, otherwise you run the risk of retaining marking residue on the fabric. Also, always test your chosen marking tool on a sample of your fabric to see if you can remove the pen or colored tailor's chalk from the fabric. Then you can draw your pattern or pattern on fabric without worry.

Chalk wheel

Ergonomic marking with chalk

With the help of our ergonomic chalk wheel pen or the chalk wheel mouse, you can transfer markings to the fabric without getting tired. The chalk powder is simply dosed with a gear wheel and leaves fine white or yellow chalk lines on your material.

Application: medium-dark fabrics

Thickness: normal

Available colors: white, yellow

Note: washable

Trick marker

Self-erasing marker pen

The purple trick marker from Prym is a classic, the marking pen simply erases itself after a while. If you do want it to go faster, just put the marked fabric in the sun to fade the pen, but even after a wash it will no longer be visible.

Application: light - medium dark fabrics

Thickness: fine and normal

Available colors: purple

Note: self-extinguishing

Cartridge pencils

Pencil for fine markings

Our cartridge pens are available in many different colors and are ideal for fine markings on fabrics or for stencil work. With the integrated eraser you can reduce the marking and with the washer you can remove it completely.

Application: light - dark fabrics

Thickness: fine

Available colors: white, yellow, gray, pink

Note: washable

Tailor's chalk

Traditional tailor chalk for marking

The all-rounder among marking tools is the classic tailor's chalk in various colors. Markings can be transferred with it to almost any fabric, they can be easily removed and washed out again.

Application: light-dark fabrics

Thickness: normal

Available colors: white, yellow, blue

Note: washable

How can you sharpen tailor's chalk?

With our Prym chalk sharpener you can easily sharpen tailor chalk. Simply run the chalkboard back and forth through the sharpener and then draw finer lines again.

Is tailor's chalk washable?

In most cases, tailor's chalk and marking pencils wash out, but to be safe, you should always test this on a swatch of your fabric.

Tracing paper for marking

Transfer pattern with tracing wheel

You want to transfer complete patterns onto your fabric or pattern paper? Then tracing paper and a tracing wheel are the ideal companions for you. The tracing wheel is like a rotary cutter in the hand and can be easily guided. But not only patterns can be transferred wonderfully with it, you can also use the smooth tracing wheel for the free cutting technique. The copied lines can be washed out later or disappear during dry cleaning.

Nice-to-know: It is best to place a pad/cutting mat on your table before copying.

Application: medium-dark fabrics

Thickness: normal

Available colors: yellow

Note: washable

Marking pens

The classics in washable or permanent

We also offer our marking pens with a white and silver lead in pencil form. They are ideal for drawing stencils or quilt patterns, for example, and are washable. However, we also have a marking pen in fine and normal for permantent marking of sewing or quilting in the assortment.

Application: medium-dark fabrics

Thickness: normal

Available colors: white, silver or black (permantent)

Note: washable for all non-permanent pens
