DIY instruction: Knit a table mat

Inspiration for using left-over yarn

Materials required:

  • 2 x cotton e.g. Certo Gots shade 0014
  • Left-over yarn in another colour for decorating the edge
  • Single-pointed knitting needles: No. 6,5
  • Small pair of scissors
  • Darning needle

Table mat size:

40 x 27 cm

Instructions:

Step 1

The main pattern is knitted in stocking stitch, i.e. one row purl, one row knit, alternately.

Moss stitch:

First row: purl 1, knit 1 and second and every alternate row: knit 1, purl 1.

Step 2

With the yarn doubled, cast on 56 stitches and knit 3 rows in moss stitch; work the first and last stitch in every row as a knit stitch.

From row 4:

knit 1, knit three stitches in moss stitch, knit 48 stitches in stocking stitch, knit three stitches in moss stitch, knit last stitch

Step 3

When you have completed 51 rows in stocking stitch, knit a further 3 rows in moss stitch. Cast off and sew in the ends.

Schritt 4

With left over yarn in another colour, a darning needle and using small stitches, embroider a decorative edging all round the mat. Sew in the ends.
